Full Study Name: Neural Substrates of Motivation
Short Study Name: Magnetic Stimulation Study of the Brain
College / Affiliation College of Arts and Sciences
Relevant Research Categories
Location of Study: University of Delaware Main Campus, Newark, DE 19716
Description of Study:

In this study, you will perform basic cognitive and motivational tasks (eg., responding to visual stimuli) on a computer after being presented with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that involves the delivery of brief magnetic pulses to stimulate neurons in the cortex and transiently disrupt neural activity in a small area of the brain. This study consists of two sessions total which take approximately 2 hours each and are separated by at least 24 hours. Participants are compensated $12.50 an hour for your participation, with an additional $5 for every 20 minutes if the session where to go longer than 2 hrs.

Will participants be compensated for participation?

5. Have a history of head injury with unconsciousness lasting more than 5 minutes.
6. Have a history of stroke.
7. Have previously had brain surgery.
8. Have medical or neurological conditions in which a seizure would be particularly harmful (e.g. increased intracranial pressure).
9. Have a history of tinnitus.
10. Have metallic hardware near head, neck or heart; examples include: cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, implantable medical pumps, ventriculo-peritoneal shunts, deep brain stimulators, or intracardiac lines.
11. Have ever had an adverse reaction to TMS.
12. Currently suffer from frequent or severe headaches.

14. Are suffering from sleep deprivation (lesser than 4 hours of sleep in the past 24hrs).
15. Currently consume any of the drugs and/or medicines listed below that are Drug Contraindications, or any drugs and/or medicine known to lower the seizure threshold.

Drug Contraindications include: Alcohol (within one hour of testing), Amitriptyline, Amphetamines, Chlorpromazine, Clozapine, Cocaine, Doxepin, Foscarnet, Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Ganciclovir, Imipramine, Ketamine, Maprotiline, MDMA (ecstasy), Nortriptyline, Phencyclidine (PCP), Ritonavir, Theophylline, or any other medication prescribed for antidepressant medication or medication prescribed to decrease seizure thresholds.
