Full Study Name: Validation of tactile aids for detection of diabetes peripheral neuropathy
Short Study Name: Testing touch-based tools to detect nerve damage in diabetic patients
College / Affiliation College of Engineering, Graduate College
Relevant Research Categories [328]
Location of Study: University of Delaware Main Campus, Newark, DE 19716
Description of Study:

The purpose of the study is to use engineered surfaces to evaluate the tactile acuity of individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. We envision that diabetic individuals will perform a simple task whereby a participant’s accuracy in distinguishing surface textures will evaluate their tactile acuity, which could correlate to the degree of neuropathy. We anticipate that this tactile aid could be used as a screening aid at hospitals or at-home tests, making assessment of neuropathy more accessible. The information gained through this research will be shared in scientific journals and used in student theses or dissertation.

Will participants be compensated for participation?
Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria:

Eligible participants must be adults (18+) with a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) who experience symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, such as numbness or reduced sensation in the hands or feet. Participants should be willing to complete a single 30-minute session interacting with tactile samples and capable of providing informed consent. Participants will be excluded if they have a history of neurological disorders (e.g. brain damage, epilepsy, etc) or traumatic brain injury. This would be inquired prior to formally meeting with any subjects.
